German footballer Benjamin Paa Kwesi Henrichs from RB Leipzig recently expressed his preference for Nigerian Afrobeats artist Burna Boy over other Nigerian musicians. In a video shared by sports journalist Oma Akatugba, Henrichs stated that he loves Burna Boy because he believes he makes good music compared to others in the industry. When asked to choose his favorite artist among the leading trio of Davido, Wizkid, and Burna Boy, the RB Leipzig full-back selected Burna Boy, explaining, “Burna boy, because he’s making good music.” Henrichs went on to mention some of Burna Boy’s hit songs and even vibed to them, illustrating the profound impact the Nigerian superstar’s music has on him.
He also acknowledged that Davido and Wizkid are also very talented artists, specifically mentioning his love for Davido’s song “fall.” Meanwhile, veteran Nollywood actor Patrick Doyle recently criticized the achievements of Burna Boy in the music industry. Despite Burna Boy’s self-proclaimed status as the “African Giant” and his assertion that many Nigerians do not recognize his worth, Doyle argued that Burna Boy and his colleagues should credit the great musicians who paved the way for them. In a Facebook post, Doyle expressed his belief that Burna Boy has not done anything outstanding by himself and that he and other Nigerian singers owe their success to past musicians.
Nigerian singers must demonstrate humility and respect towards their hardworking predecessors such as Sunny Ade, Fela Anikulapo, Majek Fashek, Ik Dairo, and numerous others who paved the way from the 1960s to the 2000s, according to Doyle’s statement.
